Nioh 2 is set in Mino Province, and this time, you create your protagonist—a character who is part human, part Yokai. Your character has the unique ability to call upon a spirit guardian for aid in battle and can also transform into a powerful Yokai. You start as a mercenary hunting down Yokai alongside Hideyoshi’s group. As in the first Nioh game, Nioh 2 is heavily inspired by historical figures, and the rest of the story is best explored by playing the game yourself.

A major addition in Nioh 2 is the Yokai powers. You can shift into a Yokai form (Yokai Shift), which is similar to the "Living Weapon" system from the first game. There are three Yokai forms, each with its unique bonus stats, which you can change after completing certain missions, much like changing your guardian spirit. Additionally, Nioh 2 introduces the Soul Core system, where you can collect the souls of enemies and transform them into them. You can upgrade these Soul Cores to unlock more bonuses or swap out stats by replacing old cores with new ones, as long as they are the same type.

One of Nioh 2's highlights is its diverse weapon system. There are 11 weapon types to choose from: Axe/Hammer, Splitstaff, Dual Swords, Tonfa, Spear, Fists, Sword, Hatchets, Kusarigama, Odachi, and Switchglaive. Each weapon has its own skill tree, progression system, and challenges that lead to mastery, offering plenty for players to discover. You can also use ranged weapons like bows, rifles, and hand cannons.

As in the first game, you can discover more guardian spirits by aiding NPCs, along with items, equipment, and weapon crafting through side quests and main missions. Some side missions and epilogues can only be played solo, and some quests require you to complete other missions to progress, so always check the map thoroughly.

The co-op system is similar to the first Nioh, though the enemies are more challenging. The game’s environments have also improved slightly, offering more variety in Yokai enemies to hunt.

Like the first Nioh, Nioh 2 also offers a New Game+ mode, where you can unlock additional guardian spirits, and weapons, and continue the story after defeating the main boss. Adding an extra challenge can also increase the difficulty in New Game+.
