Fallout 4 is another installment in the Fallout universe, connected by the events of the Great Nuclear War that occurred in 2077. The timeline of the series starts with Fallout 76 in the year 2102, followed by Fallout 1 (2161), Fallout Tactics (2197), Fallout 2 (2241), Fallout 3 (2277), Fallout: New Vegas (2281), and Fallout 4 (2287). The latest addition is the Fallout TV show, set in 2296. This timeline helps fans feel more connected to the overall story. Each game explores the unique challenges of surviving in the post-apocalyptic world with conflicts and dramas.
In Fallout 4, the story follows the main character, a father/mother(depending on who you choose to be with) searching for his/her abducted son after waking from cryo-sleep in Vault 101. The game features a massive map, perfect for exploration and discovering new places while helping or interacting with NPCs. But be cautious—this is a post-apocalyptic world where danger lurks around every corner. Killing NPCs, for example, could lock you out of certain side quests since they won’t respawn.
Players can engage in side quests to keep the game interesting beyond the main quest, which is influenced by the faction you choose. Your choice of faction affects the game's ending, so choose wisely. The four factions are the Brotherhood of Steel, Minutemen, Railroad, and the Institute (or the Raiders). Each faction has its quests, often leading to conflict with other factions, but with enough effort, you can try to bring them together for a more unified outcome.
Fallout 4 is an open-world game with a character system built around your S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats—Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. How you progress depends on which stats you choose to level up. For my playthrough, I focused on lockpicking and gathering extra resources, then added strength to carry more and deal more damage. What’s your S.P.E.C.I.A.L build?
The world of Fallout 4 is a radiated wasteland full of dangerous monsters, but you can also build settlements in safe zones you unlock. You'll need resources to construct proper settlements, and you can assign NPCs to “supply lines” to link resources between your settlements. However, be prepared to hear, “I'll mark it on your map. We could use your help,” a lot from NPCs. I recommend setting up plenty of defenses early to avoid constantly defending settlements.
You can also bring a companion along with you. Each companion has unique dialogue that can be sarcastic, funny, or even tied to their knowledge of other NPCs—especially in DLCs like Far Harbor, where Nick Valentine plays a key role. Speaking of DLCs, the game includes plenty of additional content. You’ll discover new quests by exploring the map, helping NPCs, or listening to the in-game radio.
There’s so much to do in Fallout 4: build settlements, create farms and defenses, recruit more settlers, build robots, craft weapons and clothes, and even adopt a dog from the right NPC. The game is also packed with Easter eggs waiting to be uncovered.
My final word for all gamers: “War never changes.”
