Dragon’s Dogma II takes place in a parallel universe to the original Dragon’s Dogma, set in the lands of Vermund and Battahl. The story revolves around the Arisen (the main protagonist) and their Pawns, blending politics and events in this unique universe. Like the first game, the Arisen is a hero destined to rule over the kingdom of Vermund and bring peace. However, the game features multiple endings, determined by how you approach the main and side quests and your relationships with NPCs.
Pawns assist the Arisen in combat, healing, and buffing. You can recruit other Pawns at the Riftstone, and you can travel with up to three Pawns, including your main one. Recruited Pawns are either created by other players or pre-existing characters from the game. Choosing a balanced team of Pawns is essential based on their skills and specializations. Experienced Pawns can even guide you through quests they've encountered before.
Quests can be tricky to navigate. Specific quests are marked on the map, with markers that change shape depending on your location relative to the quest area. However, some quests lack clear markers, leaving you to rely on clues from the quest description or conversations with NPCs. Experienced Pawns can also help guide you through these tasks.
Vocations (similar to classes) heavily influence the combat system, and you can unlock skills within your chosen Vocation. There are 10 Vocations to choose from: Archer, Fighter, Mage, Thief, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Sorcerer, Trickster, Warrior, and Warfare. Each offers a unique set of skills, and some Vocations can be unlocked by mastering others or completing specific NPC quests. Grabbing also play an important role whenever you guys try to pin down the enemy!
The game’s world map is well-crafted, with distinct differences between day and night. Enemies become more aggressive at night, adding an extra challenge. Explore every corner of the map to discover hidden NPCs, treasures, and puzzles. Some NPCs might even engage you with riddles as part of side quests.
Equipment plays an important role in increasing damage and defense and can be upgraded. Items are also crucial for providing buffs and can sometimes even deal a one-hit kill on enemies. These items are often rewarded through side quests or riddles. It’s important to rest, as your health depletes when characters get tired unless you use certain items to recover.
If you enjoy an action RPG with a vast, dark fantasy world that emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, and questing without relying heavily on markers, Dragon’s Dogma II is the perfect game for you. Immerse yourself in the world as the Arisen and explore all it has to offer!
