The Batman: Arkham series is a legendary franchise that includes video games, comics, novels, and animated movies. The series began with Batman: Arkham Asylum in (2009), followed by Batman: Arkham City (2011) and Batman: Arkham Knight (2015). Each game takes us deep into Gotham’s dark, crime-filled atmosphere, showcasing Batman’s relentless fight against some of his greatest enemies.
The story kicks off with Batman apprehending Joker and returning him to Arkham Asylum. However, Batman’s unease proves justified as Joker quickly takes control of the Asylum, unleashing Gotham’s most dangerous criminals and turning the institution into a battleground. Batman must navigate through Arkham, saving the staff and dealing with classic villains such as Harley Quinn, Bane, and Killer Croc.
Set after the events of Arkham Asylum, Arkham City presents a much larger, open-world environment. Batman now has to face Doctor Hugo Strange, Ra's al Ghul, and a virus-infected Joker, who forces Batman to search for a cure. The gameplay expands with new gadgets, combat mechanics, and side missions, making this sequel a fan favorite. The stakes are higher, with Arkham City essentially becoming a prison town overrun by criminals.
In the finale of the main series, Arkham Knight, Scarecrow threatens Gotham with a fear toxin that could destroy the city. Batman’s allies are brought into the fight, but he must also deal with a new, mysterious adversary—the Arkham Knight, who seems to know Batman’s every move. The city is controlled by Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight’s militia, turning Gotham into a warzone. While continuing the open-world format, the game also introduces the Batmobile as a key tool for both combat and exploration.
The combat system in the Arkham series is seamless and smooth, often compared to the mechanics of Spider-Man games. Though Batman’s moves aren’t as acrobatic, the foundation is similar: block, dodge, combo, and take down enemies. Some enemies require specialized attacks to defeat, particularly the heavy ones.
Each game’s skill tree focuses on improving combat abilities, gadgets, health, and armor. Upgrading gadgets is crucial, as they can be used in both stealth and direct combat scenarios. The grapnel boost and hacking upgrades are essential for smooth exploration and quick access to hidden areas. I recommend prioritizing these upgrades early on.
Of course, no Batman game is complete without the Riddler challenges. These puzzles and collectibles can be the most frustrating, but they add a satisfying layer of depth to the game. Completing all of the Riddler’s challenges leads to a rewarding boss fight, particularly in Arkham Knight.
One of the highlights of the Arkham series is its storytelling. The games feature rich character development, especially for Batman’s rogues gallery. Joker, Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow, and other villains aren’t just foes for Batman—they each represent different facets of his psyche and the moral challenges he must overcome. Each game delivers a compelling narrative that pulls players deeper into Gotham’s underworld.
As a long-time Batman fan, I truly appreciate how each game stays faithful to the lore, expanding on iconic characters while also giving players a fresh experience. Batman is more than just a hero—he's a symbol of Gotham’s fight for justice, and the series captures that essence perfectly.
As for the upcoming Suicide Squad game, I’m honestly concerned about its direction, especially regarding how it might tie into the Arkham series. The iconic quote from The Dark Knight movie from Two-Face himself says, "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain," which applies to what I fear is happening with the franchise. After seeing the potential direction the developers are taking with the Suicide Squad, I’m cautious about what they might do to Batman’s legacy.
The Batman: Arkham series stands as one of the best superhero video game franchises ever made. It honors the character of Batman, his world, and his complex relationships with his enemies. With engaging gameplay, a deep narrative, and vast open-world exploration, it’s an unforgettable experience for both gamers and Batman fans alike.
